Public Opinion on Gambling Safety Measures

February 22, 2024 William Mcmaster

Online gambling is being regulated differently across various countries, some of the most important include the United States, the United Kingdom, and India.

Additionally, internet gambling has grown in popularity over the years, under both minors and adults. Regulation, therefore, is of the essence for (among others) the safety and protection of underage gamblers who are taking a liking to this way of spending free time. But how does the public of these different core markets react to these regulations?

In this article, we will be discussing the public opinion on online gambling safety measures for different important countries.

Optimized-usa_law_banner.PNG (2)_Easy-Resize.com (1)

UK Public in Support of the Online Gaming Safety Measures

The support shown by the public towards the under-18s and the £2 limit for the online slot machines should encourage the government to institute additional strict safety measures if we care about the safety of the future generation.

According to the Gambling Health Alliance (GHA), only eight percent of the punters and five percent of non-punters are opposed to the £2 limit for the online slot machines, according to the Gambling Health Alliance (GHA).

With the pandemic halting education programs and children staying at home for longer, online slot machines have become the place to spend more time. Additionally, the lockdowns have led to more punters turning to online slot machines.

UKGC

Both Gamblers and Non-Gamblers Have a Say

The front-line people also said that there is little defiance to prohibit VIP schemes, which could lure punters into staking more than they planned. However, there must be sufficient research and proof of the level of harm before this levy in the gambling industry can be enforced.

Many of the punters and non-punters supported the ban of all the gambling advertising activities in areas near sporting grounds or any checks where punters can gamble.

57 percent of gamblers and 63 percent of non-punters support the idea to ban all gambling activities for the underage – that is 18 years old and below. The 18-year-olds can find the low-stake machines, crane grabs, and coin pushes that can lure them into an obsession with gambling while still young.

What the US Public is Saying About Online Gambling Safety

The United States also has a series of gambling laws to enhance online gambling safety measures. There’s the Federal Wire Act, which is still the most popular to regulate online gambling.

Other laws enhance the safety of gamblers in the US. For example, the Unlawful Internet Gaming Enforcement Act (UIEGA) bans online gambling companies from accepting funds, except in those states that have legalized online gambling.

The US public is also against the lifting of the ban on online gambling and is calling for a ban or regulation to guarantee the safety of the younger generation and other punters.

In a survey carried out by Statista, 41 percent of respondents disagree with the legalization of online gambling in several states.

In another report by prnews, only four out of ten Americans view online gambling as morally acceptable in society. This is a clear indication that the US public isn’t supporting the legalization of online gambling and if there’s such legalization, then it must be regulated.

India’s Online Gambling Fate

In India, younger people are more likely to indulge in online gambling than any other group. This is why online gambling safety measures will play a significant role in India’s gambling industry.

Approximately 45 percent of Indian gamblers are between 18 and 24 years 32 percent are between 25 and 34 years old. There’s more harm to this group of gamblers than you can imagine and this is why there’s a need to enact more robust online gambling regulations.

The government has played a significant role in ensuring that there’s an age restriction for those who are eligible to bet. In India, you must have attained the age of 21 to take part in online gambling. There are also live casino games that you can play, but you must play responsibly – within your limits.

There have been several amendments by different states, such as Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. And according to recent reports, Maharashtra is planning on legalizing and regulating online gambling.

Up to this point, there’s not much clarity about the new laws that will come up. What’s clear, though, is that discussions are ongoing to regulate online gambling in most Indian states and that new regulations will soon be introduced.

With online gambling in India growing in popularity, the plans to legalize and regulate it have commenced throughout the country. The best of all is that public opinion favors the move to legalize and regulate it for more safety, even as they wager their money.

Online Gambling Has Adverse Effects

According to Louisa Mason, the spokesperson of GHA, the gambling industry has grown in popularity and there are very high chances that it could influence and possibly undermine vulnerable people’s finances. She emphasized the need to do better and protect punters, which the public now supports.

The public now suggests the government should put more robust rules to protect the population from the negative effects of gambling. Consultations are still ongoing among the Department of digital, culture, media, and sports and will be due before the end of this month.

Industry Poised for Dutch Gambling Legalization

February 22, 2024 William Mcmaster

The outgoing Dutch Minister of Legal Protection, on 19th January 2021, issued a letter in which he announced that the Dutch Gambling Bill was further pushed forward.

According to Sander Dekker, they further pushed the Dutch Gambling Bill because they felt that the bill’s implementation needed more time.

And because of this, the legalization of the Dutch Gambling Bill will take effect from 1rst April 2021 and issuing licenses to begin on 1rst October 2021.

netherlands

The Unique Regulations in the Dutch Remote Gambling Act

We can trace a strict approach to the Dutch gambling industry historically. While this new gambling act to take effect on 1rst April allows private operators to enter the Dutch market for the first time, we still see some emphasis on player protection. Let’s take a look at what’s in the Act:

  • All casinos – both online and physical must use a central registrar (CRUKS), ensuring that all gamblers are registered using their social security number (SSN). Punters can self-exclude from any licensed websites, but once this is done, they will not access those sites. However, it’s important to note that the central registrars don’t apply to lotteries
  • They’ll be stern regulations on how operators can promote and market
  • There will be an obligatory age verification using IDIN.
  • Compulsory participation in ‘controledatabank’ KSA’s database control to record all the activities in online casinos

What this Law Means to the Dutch Gambling Industry

Once the law takes effect on 1st April 2021, operators can start applying for licenses in October. And like we said, there is some positive news from opening the Dutch gambling market, such as:

  • Existing providers will have the opportunity to expand
  • New operators will be granted the chance to come into the market

Currently, a few legal online officers are drafting the new opportunities that will result from this legalization. TOTO, one of the largest Dutch betting services, is already planning on how to capitalize on its monopoly status by launching multiple marketing campaigns before new competitors can emerge.

Dutch Market to Become Europe’s Biggest

According to analysis, Netherlands’ online gambling market is set to become one of Europe’s biggest.

This analysis forecasts that sports betting will soon become one of the most popular among Dutch punters. Then follows the online casino, which is set to be legalized in the Netherlands in April. Lotteries are already legal and also very popular with the Dutch crowd.

The Dutch gambling Bill is set to take effect starting from 1rst April and this legislation will see new competitors come into the Dutch gambling market for the first time. According to various sources, roulette is one of the most loved games, with 32 percent of the players. Blackjack follows closely with 31 percent.

The report also reveals that 25 percent of gamblers enjoy playing slot games. The rest of the punters (12 percent) play classics such as Bingo, online poker, and Baccarat.

We are Set for a New Gambling Era

Finally, the Dutch gambling legalization is here, after near a decade to put up the laws. Looking at the trends, it’s true that there will be explosive growth after the Dutch gambling bill and licenses have been issued.

While the legalization seems to be only big news to the gambling operators in the country, punters have also, in most cases, suggested that they would love to gamble on Dutch legal sites.

How the Gambling Industry & Biggest Brands are Expanding in the US

February 22, 2024 William Mcmaster

The Supreme Court in 2018 ruled that states could now legalize sports betting. And with this ruling, we have seen a rapid increase in revenue from the sports betting industry in the United States. Three years now down the line, how are betting companies strategizing to conquer the growing sports betting market in the United States?

By October 2020, the betting industry revenue had hit the $3 billion mark in a single month – something that has never happened before. Additionally, this ruling has seen the general sports revenue shoot by 53.5 percent year-after-year to $237.5 million. New Jersey has seen its sports betting revenue by 31 percent – that’s $398.5 million in 2020 from $299.3 in 2019.

  • With this in mind, let’s take a look at different sports betting companies and how they are expanding to conquer the growing United States market.
CC USA Flag

1. Golden Nugget Sports

The Michigan Gaming Control Board authorized Golden Nugget Sports to begin offering sportsbook and online casino services from January 22nd, 2021. Michigan residents will now be able to place their bets via goldennuggetcasino.com or their mobile apps, available in Android and iOS versions.

Besides, Golden Nugget Sports announced that it managed to secure one of the most coveted online sports licenses in Virginia and even given the go-ahead to begin operations in Virginia. This is a huge boost, as the company now boasts of up to 10 states, permitted by the legislation and regulatory approvals.

2. Wynnbet

Tennessee becomes the eighth state for Wynnbet, the online sports betting provider in its quest for expanding in the US market. The Director of the Sports Wagering Committee of the Tennessee Education lottery confirmed Wynbett’s legalization to start offering sports betting services in Tennessee as soon as the legislative process is complete.

Due to the rapid expansion of the US betting industry, Wynnbet is looking to expand its online betting services to many jurisdictions. Wynnbet recently agreed with Elite Casino Resorts, one of the best resort companies. With this partnership, Hawkeye State residents will now be able to access the services of Wynnbet.

3. 888 Sports

888 Sports has also been growing despite starting its operations in only three states – New Jersey, Nevada, and Delaware. The online gaming company announced in December 2020 that it would be setting foot into three more states – Lowa, Colorado, and Indiana by the start of 2021. With the three additional states, 888 sports will now be serving punters in six states. The new locations for the three new states are as follows:

  • Colorado – Grande Casino, Cripple Creek
  • Indiana – Harrah’s Hoosier Park, Anderson
  • Iowa – Catfish Bend Casino, Burlington

Though 888 sports hasn’t made it official despite the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) issuing a gaming manufacturer license to the online gaming company, Pennsylvania should follow suit.

4. Betway

Betway, one of the leading sports betting companies in the United Kingdom, is looking forward to conquering more states in the United States. The online sports betting company recently announced that it has agreed with the Digital Gaming Corporation to begin its operations in the US. Betway will begin its operations with the content company in 10 states for now.

The US sports betting revenue is forecasted to hit $2.5 billion and this is why you can see those sports betting companies are busy extending their services in various states. With the Supreme Court ruling in 2018, the sports betting industry has experienced massive growth, and it will be interesting to see how things shape up by the end of 2021.

How Gambling Can Improve Tax Revenues India

February 22, 2024 William Mcmaster

Gambling has been part and parcel of India’s culture for a long time now. Whether it’s wagering on online betting or playing card games to appease the goddess of wealth or playing casino games, gambling isn’t a new trend in India – it has existed since time immemorial. The citizens enjoy the big odds on cricket and can’t just help but stake to try their luck.

It doesn’t matter whether it’s cricket, a game of skill or game of chance, online poker, or football stakes, Indians have made gambling part and parcel of their lives and it seems like they won’t stop it any time soon – the irony is that betting is mostly unregulated in India.

In other words, there are no steadfast laws or a comprehensive framework to guide Indian’s online gambling industry at the moment. Most of the gambling is underground, even though the authorities don’t know about it.

While this is massive for Indian punters adding something to their kitties, it’s a concern for the Indian government who hasn’t started imposing taxes in the gambling industry. And this is why this question – how can imposing tax help India improve their revenues?

india regulations

There’s Incredible Tax Potential

According to a report by the KPMG on sports betting in India, the sports betting industry in India was worth $130 billion and could rise even more. In other reports, it is said that India’s turnover from gambling was about 7.5 percent of the country’s GDP.

So what could this mean for India if the government decided to get serious on taxation? For example, a 30 percent tax on all betting winnings could result in lakhs of ten million rupees that the government could use to better the country.

Additionally, making gambling legal and taxing the gambling industry means that you’ll be taking people from what’s perceived as illegal and now letting them indulge in it freely while also protecting and respecting their interests. What’s more, doing this would curb bad practices, such as money laundering, black money, and reduce illegal activities in sports.

The best of all is that legalizing this will increase sporting events viewership, increasing its overall revenue. It will bring a ripple effect that will benefit many interested parties like the broadcasters, viewers, etc.

What Next?

Sadly, there are still no taxation laws to regulate India’s gambling, making it a flat 31.2 percent, inclusive of cess. Without a proper legal framework to regulate gambling in India, the Indish government can never realize the gambling potential. Maybe, India should emulate what countries, such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy, Australia, etc., where gambling taxation helps improve their GDP.

Developing an improved legal framework to guide online gambling has brought massive gains to different governments regarding tax revenues. India is probably halfway through this process, courtesy of KYC stringent measures.

Betting Software Firm, Flutter Entertainment Sees Impressive 2020 Growth

February 22, 2024 William Mcmaster

Flutter Entertainment, owners of Paddy Power, Betfair, and PokerStars, is the world’s largest online betting group. In 2020, they reported an increase in total group revenue of 23% to $6.27 billion. This represents an increase in earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) of $1.68 billion.

This is higher than the $1.54 billion – $1.62 billion predicted in November. The figures reported do not include an EBITDA loss of $205 million in the USA. This is a growing market for sports betting expected to double its previously estimated size. In May, the company merged with The Stars Group (TSG) and increased its holding in its US FanDuel brand in November.

Gaming Market Leaders

Flutter Entertainment continued to lead the US market with 40% sports betting and 20% market shares in the 4th quarter (Q4). The US market is expected to be worth more than $17 billion by 2025, resulting from an increase in estimated sportsbook value. The number of states with legalized gambling is expected to increase too.

The company reported a 106% increase in revenue in 2020. This strong financial performance is impressive considering the problems caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Flutter Entertainment’s revenue in Australia grew by 59% to about $1.2 billion; there was an adjusted EBITDA growth of 98%. Australia was the market least affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. In Britain, the market grew by 8%.

According to the company CEO, Peter Jackson, the US market experienced the most growth in 2020. In his words, “Nowhere has our growth been more evident than in the US, where we have consolidated our number one position in this crucial market, with customer economics that continues to exceed our expectations. “

He went on to say, that “We finished the year as the first US online operator to reach over $1.1 billion in gross gaming revenue. While the global outlook remains uncertain, our momentum remains strong, and we look forward to the future with confidence”.

That is certainly something to look forward to for their customers.

Revenue in 2020

In the United States, revenue increased by a whopping 81% to $839 million. This increase resulted from the TSG merger and the increase in the number of states where online betting is legal over the last year. In 2020, Flutter Entertainment launched the FanDual online sportsbook in an additional four (4) states.

These states are Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, and Tennessee. Online gaming was also launched in Pennsylvania. Sports revenue increased by 42%, resulting from the sportsbook growth of 101% and combined daily fantasy sports and racing growth of 15%. According to Flutter Entertainment, adjusted EBITDA in its PPB Retail division decreased to $2.4 million from $91.7 million in 2019. This decrease came after the disruptions in its retail estates as a result of COVID-19 restrictions.

It is reported that the division’s shops were closed for about 38% of 2020, leading to a 36% decline in revenue. The PPB Retail division includes Paddy Power Shops. According to the company, they kept on paying staff even when the shops were closed, and they have promised to continue that for as long as the shops remain closed.

At Flutter entertainment’s PPB online division, revenue increased by about 8% to $1.32 billion. This increase resulted from a 6% monthly growth in average monthly players to 1.4 million; this increase was more evident in the second half of the year. The increase is most likely due to the closure of PPB retail shops resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. In the United Kingdom and Ireland, the company expects an EBITDA loss of £9 million each month that retail estates in these countries remain closed.

The year 2021 has seen Flutter entertainment experience a strong start. The company’s group revenue in the first seven (7) weeks of 2021 increased by 36% year on year, and the increase has been listed as being due to a growth in player volume in all the company’s divisions. During the recent Super Bowl, the company gained 350,000 new sportsbook and gaming customers.

Contextually, the record-breaking number is greater than the operator’s entire 2019 customer acquisition numbers. Apart from that, sports betting operations experienced a 25% year-on-year constant currency rise. There was also a gaming revenue rise of 32% year on year to $2.8 billion. All in all, it’s looking pretty rosy for Flutter Entertainment and their gaming customers.
