What Are Wagering Requirements And How To Fulfill Them?| The Casino Academy

February 22, 2024 William Mcmaster

Seasoned online casino gamblers are no stranger to wagering requirements. Even newbies who’ve researched about betting at online casinos must have also encountered the term at some point. Be that as it may, the concept of wagering is something that is not easy to comprehend.

If you’re one of those who find the term mind-boggling, then this article is for you. We’ll explain what are wagering requirements in a digestible way and share with you some tips to beat them. After reading this article, you won’t be scratching your head in confusion next time you hear the term again.

Wagering Requirements Defined

First things first, let’s get the definition out of the way. Wagering requirements are the total number of times the casino requires you to play through the bonus you received before you can withdraw any winnings.

Nearly every bonus online casinos offer comes with a wagering requirement. So, if you’re searching how to withdraw bonus money without playing it through, chances are you won’t find an answer. You must fulfill the wagering requirements first.

Sounds unfair, but it’s not. You can’t expect the casinos to give you something without anything in return, would you? Remember, they aren’t nonprofit organizations. Besides, those are free money you received. If you can withdraw those too easily, all casinos will be out of business in no time.

How To Bet To Fulfill The Wagering Requirements?

Now that you know what wagering requirements are, you need to learn how to fulfill them to make a withdrawal. First, you must know how to calculate them. Let’s have an example for you to better grasp the concept. So, let’s say you want to take advantage of a casino bonus of 100% up to $100. That means when you deposit $100, the casino will match your deposit 100%.

So, you’ll have a total of $200 in your casino account. Cool, isn’t it? However, the casino placed a 10x wagering requirement which means you have to play through the bonus 10x. Does that mean you’ll just bet 10x and you can withdraw your bonus money afterward? Not quite.

To get the specific number of times you need to wager, you have to multiply the bonus by the wagering requirements. In our example above, the rollover (wagering) requirements will be $100 (bonus) x 10 (wagering requirements), which is $1,000. So, you need to wager a total of $1,000 before the casino allows you to make a withdrawal.

In some cases, the casino will also require that you play through your deposit plus the bonus. Using our example above, your rollover requirements will be $200 ($100 deposit + $100 bonus) x 10 (wagering requirements). The total of which is $2,000.

How Does Betting To Meet The Wagering Requirements Work?

To fulfill the wagering requirements, you must bet using the bonus money until you reach the target amount. Sounds simple. However, if you’re thinking you can place a huge amount of bets to get it done and over with, you’re wrong. Most online casinos will put a max bet limit when you’re playing through your bonus. They will only allow you to make small bets at a time to complete the wagering requirements.

Another thing to keep in mind is the game weighting. Online casino games will have different weights in terms of contribution to the wagering’s completion. Casinos decide on this, and you’ll find it stated in their terms and conditions. It’s best that you know how much a particular game will contribute to the wagering requirements. That way, you can make a smart assessment on how to play through your bonus effectively.

wagering_requirements_1

Conclusion

You might think that rollover requirements are a total boon and not taking the bonus to avoid this playthrough hassle is a wise decision. However, the truth is that the bonus gives you somewhat of an edge over the casino. You’ll be able to play longer, giving you more chances to hit a big win. Make sure you don’t break any rules in the terms and conditions, and you’ll be well on your way to completing those playthrough requirements in no time.

However, if you’re adamant against fulfilling wagering requirements, then look for casinos offering a no-wagering bonus. We suggest our casino toplist page as a good place to start your hunt.

Wagering Requirements FAQ

Why do online casinos implement wagering requirements?

First, as we’ve mentioned above, casinos need to earn money to stay in business. Second, they need to safeguard themselves from bonus abusers. Last and more importantly, it’s a way to prevent money laundering. With the wagering requirement in place, no one can deposit a large amount of cash and then withdraw it disguised as winnings.

What game contributes the most to meeting the wagering requirements?

Games’ weight varies from one online casino to another. However, you’ll find that slots will almost always contribute 100% to your wagering requirements. Be wary though of what slots you play. There will be slots that the casinos will exempt, which means they will not contribute at all to your meeting the rollover requirements.

Does playing through the bonus guarantee a win?

Absolutely not. You must understand that you are still gambling when betting to fulfill the said requirements. No bonus money or play-through rules can affect the outcome of the game. When gambling, it’s always your luck that will determine if you’ll win or lose.

Are there any other factors that affect the wagering requirements?

One more thing you need to check is if the casino placed an expiration date on the playthrough requirements. An expiration date means you need to complete the rollover requirements on or before that date. Otherwise, the casino will forfeit your bonus altogether.

What else in the terms and conditions should you pay attention to?

You should pay close attention to everything that’s written in the terms and conditions, especially the fine prints. We can’t emphasize this enough. We’ll even go as far as suggesting that you take a screenshot of those for your protection.

Blacklisted and Unlicensed Online casinos

February 22, 2024 William Mcmaster

In this new age of web technology and online gambling, several unlicensed and unregistered online casinos are beginning to pop up and catch people out. It’s very difficult to know which online casino is authentic and isn’t, however, in this article we’ll tell you about subtle differences in these illegal websites and why you should use the legal options posted on our webpage at CompareCasino.

blacklisted (1)

What is a Blacklisted Online Casino?

Blacklisted online casinos are those which haven’t got a license from the authoritative gambling commission within its specific state.

Within the USA, if an online casino wants to offer gambling options for its users, it will need to apply for a gambling license, where several checks are carried out. These checks ensure the online casino is legitimate and are sticking to all the guidelines and regulations set out by the commission.

However, blacklisted online casinos will disregard gambling licenses on purpose, so they can get away with stealing money and the identities of the players who opt to use their websites.

How to check the authenticity of online casinos

Blacklisted online casinos will most likely forge the license number located at the bottom of their website. If you think an online casino is illegal, simply check the gambling license number with the respective commission in that state, and they’ll let you know if it’s authentic or not.

Some won’t even provide one, as most users aren’t bothered with checking these things. Those companies that don’t provide users with easy access to the license number are most likely illegal and should be reported to the authorities.

The Risks of Playing at Blacklisted Online Casinos

There are several risks that are involved in signing up to blacklisted online casinos in the USA. Here are a few of the risks, and issues you’ll encounter at illegal online casinos:

Money and Banking Issues

The moment you make the first deposit at an illegal online casino, the owners will have full details of the credit and debit cards used on the site. However, if you used an e-wallet then they won’t have the details for those accounts as e-wallets have added security. Once the details are taken for cards users may experience funds being taken from accounts from unknown individuals.

The usual mishaps that occur with money at these blacklisted casinos occur when withdrawals want to be processed. These establishments will go to the world’s end to stop any withdrawals from being made, and, in most cases, say the withdrawal has been accepted. Then they’ll never process the withdrawal and remove the user’s account from the website entirely.

Promotions and Bonus Issues

The bonuses and promotions will be unreal, and extremely high. Giving users 300x — 500x on their first deposits. Users will then be able to use these funds on all games provided on the website, which will most likely be rigged as well.

The wagering requirements will be unobtainable when you apply for the bonus. The typical wagering requirements for legalized online casinos go along the lines of ‘35x wagering required to be carried out within 30 days.’ At blacklisted online casinos, this wagering requirement may be in excess of 50x to be carried out within as little as 5 days.

What happens if you manage to complete the wagering requirements? The online casino will most likely remove your account upon asking for a withdrawal.

Software Issues

The software provided at illegal casinos will be rigged. Return to player percentages won’t be as high as expected, and random number generators won’t be audited by the well-established authorities. A live dealer casino will not be provided as this is where most players make their money and these establishments only work with companies who have a credited gambling license.

Customer Support Issues

The customer care is very basic. On occasions, someone will answer the phone and help with small queries. On other occasions, the phone will ring out, and companies won’t get back to you at all.

Why Use Legal Gambling Options?

Legal betting options provide everything that the blacklisted casinos can’t provide their users, in terms of safety and security. Users can be assured that the top level of web security is used with SSL encryption and bank-level security at the top-rated casinos. Other perks of using a legal online casino include:

  • Betting License from accredited commissions
  • Easy withdrawal process
  • Simple wagering requirements
  • Amazing customer support
  • Responsible gambling advocates
  • Regulated software and games

We recommend having a look at the top listed online casinos featured on our website here are CompareCasino. The online casinos will have all the good points mentioned above and exclude all the bad points mentioned earlier.

Final Thoughts

Gambling at Blacklisted online casinos in the USA is a risky business. It might be fun at first with the huge amounts of free money you receive, but then it’ll take a turn for the worst when you decide it’s time to make withdrawals and try to take your money back. This is why we recommend using the legal options featured on the CompareCasino website.

Your Guide to Texas Sports Betting

February 22, 2024 William Mcmaster

Online sports betting in the USA is becoming increasingly popular. The once illegal act has recently been legalized in several states this year including; Connecticut, Massachusetts, Missouri, Maine, Arizona, and Kansas.

As it stands Texas is not set to legalize online gambling within its state. Sources suggest that legalization may be sped up due to pressure from other states, however, it’s unlikely to occur until 2023.

When it does happen Texas will see a massive increase in revenue, this will be the driving factor to getting legalization put through. The sheer volumes of cash flowing into the industry.

The Current Gambling Situation

There are no plans to allow online gambling within the state of Texas. The government officials didn’t join states this year in allowing the legalization of online gambling. This was quite the despair for players and several companies waiting on the state – all of which want a slice of the action.

There are still exceptions for players to place bets, with the option to do so only on specific sports. Currently, punters can bet on horse racing at specific establishments. This usually occurs at the racetrack, where the races are being held. Online and mobile app gambling is not permitted for horse racing, only in-person betting.

DraftKings and FanDuel are also restricted but can still operate in the state. These companies can offer players the chance to play fantasy sports games. This isn’t regulated just yet, but regulations may come into place over time. However, it seems that users are still able to gamble with offshore sportsbooks and place bets such as prop bets, in line bets, and in-play betting.

Recently, regulators from Texas have spoken to their respective counterparts in New Jersey, about what’s the best to go about bringing sports betting to the state. These discussions are hoped to lay the parameters for legislation in the state.

The Future Layout for SportsBetting in Texas

Online sports betting is inevitable in almost every state across the USA. Without a doubt, Texas will eventually join the other states in legalizing online sports betting. There’s simply too much money within the sports betting industry. So what may happen on day 1 when legislation happens?

There will be a select few online sportsbooks that will be selected and allowed to operate in the state. Typically, big companies may come in like Draft Kings, and MGM. Alternatively, the state may allow smaller companies to create sites and provide services to try and keep money within the state rather than having several giants coming in. Once these companies have the green light from the state they’ll be able to onboard players on a specified date.

One proposed plan is the idea that 14 – 20 licenses will be available for an online sportsbook. With this awarded to selected sportsbooks.

Users will all receive awesome bonuses and promotions for signing up to these sportsbooks. Sports such as soccer, football, horse racing, baseball, basketball, boxing, MMA, and many more will be available for users to bet on.

Final Thoughts

The pressure to legalize online sports betting in Texas is beginning to grow. The government will eventually cave in and allow players to begin sports betting. As we mentioned, they’ve been reported to be speaking to officials and regulators in NJ for advice on legalization. This could mean it will come sometimes within the new few years and 2023 at the latest.

Most players are going to offshore websites to place bets. So it only makes sense for Texas to legalize gambling and take a portion of the revenue. Before that happens we recommend brushing up on your sports and learning some new betting strategies so you can make money when legalization occurs.

Predictions for the Future of iGaming

February 22, 2024 William Mcmaster

For any industry, being able to spot trends and plan for the future is an essential part of success. Large organizations pay huge sums of money to analyze and predict consumer behavior to inform their upcoming business strategy. The iGaming industry is no different, and each year people make predictions as to what the upcoming year may bring.

2020 was a strange year for iGaming and the world as a whole as a pandemic gripped the world and many countries enforced shutdowns. This led to the postponement of sports and the closure of retail casinos, affecting both sports betting and brick and mortar casino gaming. On the other hand, online casinos saw their profits increase as more people than ever signed up to play.

While it’s impossible to know what the future holds for 2021, we can make some educated predictions as to what the year may hold based on current trends and recent events. Below are some of the top predictions from industry experts relating to the iGaming industry in 2021.

2021_igaming_790x162

Industry Growth

The past few years have seen a dramatic increase in the number of people choosing to gamble online, and it’s expected for this to continue to grow. 2020 saw the emergence of the COVID virus which has meant that non-essential businesses have had to close their doors, including many sportsbooks and casinos. This has led to a growing number of gamblers signing up for online sites, and this growth will no doubt continue into 2021 as lockdowns persist across the world.

growthchart_790x162

The online gambling industry has been predicted to grow at a CAGR of 11.5%, reaching a $127.3 billion value by 2027. This growth is partly thanks to the increasing number of gambling brands that are moving online as well as the availability of mobile gaming. In 20202, around 3 billion people had access to a smartphone, and a large percentage of those regularly used their phones to play games. With more gambling sites optimizing for mobile use, 2021 will no doubt see an increase in the number of people signing up to play and bet from their phones or tablets.

New Payment Methods Including Adoption of Cryptocurrency

Making payments at online gambling sites is often a significant barrier of entry for a lot of potential players. While most sites try to make the payment process as simple as possible, there are often still a lot of hoops that the customer needs to jump through to make a deposit. On top of security concerns, this often puts off a lot of would-be online gamblers, leading to lower revenues.

cryptocurrency_790x162

The iGaming industry is always looking for ways to improve the payment process, and as a result, we predict that 2021 will see several changes in how payments can be made. Services like Trustly offer a more secure method for online payments and provide peace of mind to consumers as well as making the payment process much simpler. As these services grow in popularity, we expect to see more online casinos and sportsbooks accepting them as payment methods.

Cryptocurrency had a great year in 2020 as coins such as Bitcoin surged in popularity and significantly increased in value. This rise in value was partly thanks to PayPal now allowing cryptocurrencies to be bought and sold through its platform and will potentially lead to wider adoption of these digital currencies. At the moment, major cryptocurrencies are accepted by only a few gambling sites and not many of the major brands. In 2021, this is expected to change as more sites start to see the value in accepting crypto payments and will even offer withdrawals in major cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum.

More focus on eSports Betting

eSports were some of the few competitions which were largely unaffected by the global shutdown in 2020. While major sports leagues such as the NBA, NFL and Premier League all closed down temporarily, eSports were able to continue online. This brought the spotlight onto a sport that’s been gradually increasing its market share in the past few years.

esport_790x162

eSports have gone from a relatively fringe event to a mainstream hobby recently. It has gained further legitimacy from sportsbooks that now offer markets on lots of different eSports events. When sports bettors had reduced options to bet on, they found that eSports were still available and the number of eSports bets placed during this period rose significantly. It remains to be seen whether this will cause an increase in the number of eSports fans, but considering the sport has been growing steadily in popularity, we expect it to continue.

With major sports leagues potentially facing more shutdowns in 2021, we expect that more sportsbooks will start to offer markets on eSports events as they’ll be keen to avoid further losses in revenue. Major eSports competitions are expected to continue online, for now, avoiding any major disruption to schedules.

Expanding Markets in Indian and Latin America

The Indian iGaming market is currently worth an estimated $930 million and is going through a period of rapid growth. The market’s total value is expected to quadruple over the next decade, putting it as one of the largest gambling markets in the world. There’s a growing interest among Indians in traditional sports betting as well as eSports betting and casino gaming. The market is still relatively new with little saturation and plenty of opportunities for companies to grow provided they have one of the accepted licenses to operate in the country.

india_banner_790x162

Latin America, particularly Brazil and Colombia, are also emerging and showing potential for growth in iGaming. Colombia was the first Latin American country to fully legalize and regulate online gambling in 2016. Growing demand for sports betting and other forms of gambling mean the country is an excellent opportunity for iGaming businesses. Brazil’s gambling market has largely been illegal, but recent years have seen the introduction of new regulations, and the country looks poised to allow online gambling. It’s worth noting that Brazil has the fourth-highest number of internet users in the world, showing the massive potential for iGaming growth in the country.

Final Thoughts

After an unusual 2020, there’s still a lot of uncertainty over how 2021 will look. What we can expect, however, is that the online iGaming industry will continue growing and developing. The growth of the mobile market is another big factor as more sites optimise for mobile users and include mobile-only features. With growth into new markets and emerging demand for eSports betting, the future looks bright for online iGaming.

Kansspelautoriteit Poised to Liberate Dutch Gambling Market

February 23, 2024 William Mcmaster

The Netherlands’ Gambling Authority, Kansspelautoriteit, is moving towards liberalizing the country’s gambling market. For the longest time, the Holland Casino holds a monopoly in the Netherlands’ offline gambling market. Meanwhile, the government prohibits online gambling. Things are about to shift, though, with the implementation of Kansspelautoriteit law changes in 2021.

CC_kansspelautoriteit (1) (1)

Kansspelautoriteit Brief History

The KSA (Kansspelautoriteit) is the Kingdom of the Netherlands’ independent gambling regulatory authority. Founded on April 1, 2012, it supervises and regulates gambling in the Kingdom’s European part.

While the Minister of Justice and Security handles gambling policy, it’s the KSA’s task to ensure its implementation. Thus, the KSA enforces the Wet op de kansspelen (Betting and Gaming Act of 1964) and other legislation.

The KSA is working on implementing the latest legislation, the Remote Gambling Act, approved by the Senate on February 19, 2019. This will pave the way for liberalization, breaking the country’s gambling monopoly in the process.

Kansspelautoriteit To Open Netherlands’ Online Gambling Market in 2021

While online gambling is prohibited in the Netherlands, the Dutch gamblers find a way through offshore gambling providers. This leaves them susceptible to unfair play with no online gambling laws in their own country to protect them. Thus, the need for reform in the Kansspelautoriteit laws is in order.

It’s been a long time coming, but the government finally approved the Remote Gambling Act that will come into force in 2021. The new legislation will allow operators to apply for an online gambling license to offer legal services in the Netherlands. The Kingdom now opens its doors not only to operators in the land but also the offshore ones.

Some Dutch Gambling Companies Waiting

Shortly after the House of Representatives passed the legislation in 2016, Dutch gambling companies took steps in preparation for it. As early as 2017, some companies swam over the shores of Malta and set up their operations in the small country.

Most of them only own entertainment arcades in the Netherlands because of Holland Casino’s monopoly of the Dutch gambling market. They wanted to be ready when the Dutch market opened up for competition. Hence, they chose to set up operations in another country early on.

With its well-regulated gambling laws, high-class infrastructure, and EU membership, Malta is an ideal location. These companies also hope to win the KSA’s approval with them having a Maltese license in hand.

Quite A Number Of International Gambling Companies Interested

Since one of KSA’s tasks is to issue the license, the regulatory authority announced an interested registration period in June 2019. The announcement is an invitation to international gambling firms who are interested to operate in the Netherlands. All interested parties then filled the I want to become a Kansspelautoriteit license holder on the gaming authority’s website.

The KSA revealed the number of interested parties totaled 79. This gives them an idea of the number of licensing applications to expect when the Remote Gambling Act comes into force. With 79 companies answering the call on such short notice in 2019, the KSA might just be in for a significant number of licensing applications to process in 2021.

Kansspelautoriteit Taking Calculated Steps

The gambling industry is a witness to how busy Kansspelautoriteit has been these days. The Netherlands’ Gaming Authority has been all over the place, signing MoU after MoU among other things.

There are still months left before the Netherlands Remote Gaming Act enters into force. However, the Kansspelautoriteit has already been signing several memoranda of understanding with other regulators.

So far, it secured MoU with the following gambling regulatory authority:

  1. MGA – Malta Gaming Authority
  2. Spelinspektionen – Swedish Gambling Regulator
  3. ANJ – L’Autorité Nationale des Jeux, French National Gaming Authority

The agreement provides an open communication channel between the regulatory authorities for the common good. The said authorities agreed to share information and best practices and engage in policy discussion. Ultimately, their common goal is to provide a better gambling environment in the entire industry.

The gambling community also witnessed over the years how the KSA has been cracking down on violators of its gambling laws. Its collected fines in October 2019 totaled 3.5 million, a significant increase to its 1.9 million total in 2018. This year, Kansspelautoriteit partnered with tech giant Facebook in combating illegal gambling.

All these actions could be KSA’s effort to clear the way for the implementation of its Remote Gambling Act in 2021. It seems it is leaving no stones unturned, making sure the legislation will not experience any major bumps on the road.

The Effect of KSA’s New Regulatory Framework To The Gambling Community

Fellow Regulators

The KSA is forming strong partnerships with its fellow regulators for the common cause of fighting unlawful gambling practices. As such, the KSA’s recent actions with regard to strict online gambling restrictions are not something that can directly harm its fellow regulators. In addition, almost all other gambling regulators are gearing towards stricter laws and regulations.

One regulator that will suffer is Curacao. Interestingly, Curacao like the Netherlands belongs to the 4 nations that make up the Kingdom of the Netherlands. With Curacao succumbing to the pressure of the Netherlands regarding gambling rules, the country might just lose some of its licensees.

Operators

Online gambling operators are always interested in offering services to as many nations as possible. So, the Netherlands’ door opening up to online gambling means a new market that operators can exploit.

With regard to Kansspelautoriteit implementing strict laws, operators are well aware of how strict the Dutch gambling laws can get. Because almost all rules are being laid out before the legislation takes effect, operators have an idea what to expect once they become licensees. They can either agree to abide by the rules and get a license or look for an open market elsewhere.

Players

According to KSA, all new licensees must be registered at the Central Exclusion Registry (Cruks). The said registry will give the players the freedom to choose only those online gambling companies which they trust. With this system, the KSA expects to weed out those operators who are practicing an unjust and unfair play. As shady online casinos grow in number as much as the reputable ones, the KSA claims such a registry will help combat the problem. Thus, it is in the best interest of the players.

Final Thoughts

A new well-regulated gambling framework is always a welcome addition to the online gambling community. In its entirety, the KSA’s actions in preparation for 2021’s Remote Gambling Act implementation won’t harm the industry. In fact, legal and trustworthy casinos may benefit from it all. The Kansspelautoriteit is making an all-out effort to plan the smooth implementation of the legislation. However, it’s flawless execution remains to be seen.

Vegas After Coronavirus — Debates of How to Reopen

September 30, 2021 Charlene Gatt

It wasn’t that long ago that the state of Nevada reported the death of its first COVID-19 victim in Carson City. What followed after was the state’s mandate to shut down all non-essential services for a period of 30 days in mid-March.

las_vegas_covoid

As you can imagine, all hotels, conventions, bars, and restaurants had to close down. However, the hardest hit was the closure of all casinos along the Vegas Strip, leaving thousands of workers in a state of turmoil.

Some, like Sin City’s Wynn Resorts, shut down its doors way before the order and promised to retain its workers with pay for up to two weeks since they could only do so much.

With the severed incomes and impact on the state economy, the Mayor, Carolyn Goodman, recently called for businesses to return to usual. Could this be a glimmer of hope during these dark times?

Sin City’s recovery meets opposing forces

In a recent interview, the Mayor pointed out that this wasn’t the state’s first encounter with a deadly virus. She also pointed out they have faced far many challenging obstacles, such as the financial crisis of 2008 that the country recently recovered from. However, what she didn’t know was that the greatest opposition would come from the governor of Nevada, Steve Sisolak.

Goodman’s fight against COVID-19 is limited to her authority. The real power lies with governor, Steve Sisolak, who issued a statement saying that the state would not be used as a control group. He prioritized the worker’s health and mentioned that they were not ready to open their doors just yet.

Another opposing force was the secretary-treasurer for Culinary Workers Union, Geoconda Argüello-Kline, who also called out the Mayor on her outrageous statements. Most workers were also quick to issue their concerns about returning to work in such unpredictable times.

While the matter was still under debate, the Nevada Gaming Control Board went on to issue their strict guidelines underlining the steps required for the casinos to re-open their doors.

Recovery on the Las Vegas strip said to take after Macau casinos

Nevada’s casino executives are now looking up to Macau, who recently re-opened casino doors to the public under strict restrictions. As the world’s largest gambling market, it surprisingly shut down its operations for less than a month. This is despite it being in close proximity to mainland China, where the virus allegedly hailed from. So, what measures did they undertake?

Through the local government, Macau casinos had to increase the number of testing kits at the entrances of all casinos. They also had their employees attest to their health by undergoing regular temperature checks. However, the biggest change of all had to reduce the number of gambling stations to enhance social distancing restrictions.

Can American casinos adopt the “Macau strategy”

The Western casinos were quick to pick on these guidelines and even came up with some of their own. It shouldn’t be too hard considering most western based casinos have more slots machines rather than tables. Their only strife would come on the use of face masks. Up to this day, many Americans still walk the streets unprotected. Enforcing this, as a rule, would play well on their part.

As a result, Las Vegas operators such as Wynn Resorts, MGM Resorts International, Caesars Entertainment Corp., as well as the Las Vegas Sands Corp all gave their input on re-opening their doors. Wynn Resorts CEO Matt Maddox explains his decision to retain his employees, dubbing it as a cheaper option. On the other hand, they’d have to fire the existing employees (which wouldn’t go well with the workers Union), hire and train workers, and hope that the standards would not be altered.

COVID affects other hospitality businesses

The talks again fell to Geoconda Argüello-Kline, who after serious reconsiderations, came to soften his stance with time. He reported that the deliberations would not only be limited to Vegas casinos on the Strip but also to potential small local businesses. He went on to urge the companies to enhance their cleaning techniques and allow special teams to bring in new chemicals.

Other measures to be undertaken included talks of reopening facilities such as hotels nearby. Since Las Vegas profits well of gambling tourism, they’d have to reconsider that too. Excellent proposals included limiting the number of rooms by only opening hotels up to a third of its capacity. Tourists would also have to take temperature tests and other mandatory coronavirus tests at the entrances of every outlet.

With the new measures in mind, it was up to the Nevada governor, Sisolak, to approve of the grand re-opening. However, he recently stated, “I don’t have an exact number, but I’ll take a lot of advice from our medical folks and determine what’s in the best interest of keeping all Nevadans safe.” As pressure mounted on him with all eyes glued to his statements, he also reassured Nevadans that the decision of when to reopen would not be a political decision.

Impact on reopening Las Vegas casinos

As the heated talks were underway, one major hotel-casino on the Las Vegas strip went ahead to formulate plans of the city’s reopening. Treasure Island rolled out its plans by undertaking reservations for tourists’ arrivals set as early as May 15th. They would, however, have to wait for the reopening plans to pass through the Gaming Control Board.

The underlying issue, however, was how the state and the country would pick it up. Whether strict laws are issued, there are many unscrupulous businesses that prioritize capitalizing on profits as opposed to looking after the health of their workers.

Vegas businesses wrestle with restrictions

I saw it right after the Nevada governor ordered the closure of all non-essential services when one strip club called Little Darlings defied these orders. Instead, they used the opportunity to increase their sales by advertising on their “coronavirus free” dancers, and nude hand sanitizer wrestling.

However, once the authorities closed in on their activities, they put up a sign, “Sorry, we’re clothed.” Other signs like the MGM Grand read, “Stay safe, stay strong, we look forward to welcoming you back soon,” with the #VegasStronger set into place.

Nonetheless, should the doors reopen, the state would report a decrease in the number of unemployment applications. With every passing week, unemployment filings rise with up to 41,000 new cases reported every week. Reopening the industry would see more people working.

What baffled me was the fact that with everything going around, the state considered reopening its casinos while schools remain closed. That goes to show the law’s interpretation of essential services provision.

Other impacts of COVID-19 in Vegas Nevada

The COVID-19 pandemic has not only affected the closure of casinos but the gaming industry as a whole. In 2019, the Las Vegas Strip recorded total revenue of $6 billion worth of gaming revenue. In comparison, Macau casinos made $36.6 billion over the same period.

As more confirmed positive cases spread, so did the decline of more visitors into the region. This, in turn, led to a decline in revenue generated during the first quota of the year. Tourist bans as a result of the closure of land-based casinos became more apparent in states that have since then embraced total lockdown.

Other major sporting events that got axed include all performing tours by various artists as well as major conventions and Trade shows. The most highlighted gatherings include the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA), and The Shooting, Hunting, and Outdoor Trade Show (SHOT).

The state also stood in solidarity with the rest of the globe in its cancellation of all major sporting events. Major football leagues such as the NFL and English Premier League, the upcoming Olympics and Paralympics, cricket, motorsport, rugby union, boxing, and MMA all took a hit. Moreover, most tourists would drop their kids at Disneyland and drive off to Vegas only a day’s ride away. That is also not possible following the shutdown as well as state lockdown.

Some winners emerge from the pandemic

However, it’s not all negative with the COVID-19 pandemic. In regard to sports, most online gaming sites have recorded a 40% increase in the number of new registrations. This follows the subsequent increase in the number of unemployment cases. As a result, the online community has recorded more revenue generated during this crisis period as more people spend time indoors.

Moreover, there have also been reports on the nature trade-off paradigm shift. In Italy, the return of dolphins back to the canals was something that had not been seen for a while. Other countries also reported on a reduction in noise pollution rates as under the stay-at-home rule. With that same regard, the state of Nevada, which is home to 3.08 million residents as of 2019, has also seen a significant reduction in pollution.

Weighing the costs and benefits for a better future

That said, the reopening of businesses, as usual, opens up the possibilities of economic benefits. On the other hand, it also opens up the risk of spreading the virus to innocent Nevadans. One thing is for sure though; Las Vegas will either emerge stronger or weaker depending on how the situation is handled.
